Diary of an Online Marketer

By Janet Matthews

I am sure it will come as no surprise that statistically 95% of people who set out to make a living online are unsuccessful. Of the 5% who mange to negotiate the first few hurdles and make a small income 95% of them drop out after 5 years. As I have been online now for 2.5 years I guess I must be part of that original 5%. The question is will I be a part of the next 5% who actually make a real success of this or the 95% who drop out in the first 5 years. Apparently many of those 5% of people who drop out during the first 5 years are on the brink of cracking the code and making either a part time or full time income.

My own experience tells me that I am on the brink of making a success of online marketing. After much deliberation I decided to try my hand at affiliate marketing. I have set up 4 blogs, joined various social networks including Squidoo and Hub pages, joined half a dozen article sites and identified about a dozen products both digital and tangible and finally written numerous articles and blogs to get my campaign going.

According to the many ebooks I have read, I am on the right lines, all I have to do now is write, write, write articles until I have swamped the article sites with my information. Article marketing seems to be the way forward.

Every day I feel I am one step nearer, but however hard I try I seem unable to dispel the doubt and fear that overcomes me from time to time. Questions like "how much more money do I need to spend to finally find the holy grail?" "Do I really need that other ebook on bum marketing?" " Do I really need a list and an autoresponder?" "Will anybody want to hear what I have to say?"

Doubt and fear play a big part in most people's lives. Fear of change, fear of rejection, fear of making a fool of yourself, fear of commitment and of course fear of failure. For me the answer is to conquer that fear and not allow it to rule my life. I once read a book called "Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway". What a wonderful mantra for a "would be" internet marketer!!

I recently attended an internet marketing seminar. The main message I came away with was "stop thinking of yourself as a newbie". I still refer to myself as a newbie 2.5 years down the line. I started to give some serious thought to this and realized that the reason I was still referring to myself as a newbie was in part due to the fact that I am not as yet making any substantial money online, but if I was really honest it was mainly because it served as an excuse for not making the big time. Being a newbie allowed me to keep learning instead of putting what I have already learned into practice.

So the moral of this "intel" is to "feel the fear and do it anyway" and stop believing that it is necessary to know everything before taking that leap of faith and putting what you do know into practice.

You probably have learned an amazing amount in 2.5 years. Congratulate yourself on your progress so far! I know it is hard to earn money on-line because I've been trying (with a website partner) for 1.5 years and we haven't cracked it. However, we are not ready to give up.
