My memories of school
By Janet Matthews
For some reason I loved school. I am now 60 years old and retired and I still love learning. I would love to know if there is a "learning" gene, if there is I was certainly blessed with a very large dose. My early school years were a joy for me. I loved my teachers and I was a "good girl". Not the teachers pet, but I wanted to do well and I wanted my teachers to think well of me. I remember working hard for the "courtesy badge" that was awarded once a week and the feeling of pride when I was praised for a job well done. My experience at secondary school, although enjoyable as far as the work was concerned, was more problematic re friendships and relationships with others. Teenage years and hormones started to kick in and there were many traumatic days spent wondering who I was and how I was to fit in with the vast array of characters in my "all girls" Grammar School. Work had come easily to me in primary school, but secondary school was another matter altogether. I began to realize that the competition was fierce and I was going to have to work really hard to keep up and succeed. My favorite teacher was my English teacher, who engendered in me a real love for literature. She was a very gifted teacher who inspired me in more ways than one. Not surprisingly I didn't want to leave school, so when the time came to hang up my school uniform I decided my best option was to train to be a teacher, which would enable me to remain in the school setting as long as I chose to. The "other side of the fence" came as quite a shock. I had decided for various reasons to train as a primary school teacher but very soon realized that really wasn't for me and quickly changed course to secondary. After I had completed my training I got my first job in what was then called a Secondary Modern School ( next step down from a grammar school). The school was a mixed catholic school in a dockside area of Liverpool. It was a million miles away from my "all girls" Grammar School and came as quite a culture shock. Although there were times when I enjoyed the school environment it didn't give me the good feeling I had hoped for and when I eventually left to start a family I vowed never to teach ever again. Well all the best laid plans are often thrown in the air and land where we least expect them. Financial circumstances meant that I did eventually return to teaching, and after several years of feeling distinctly uncomfortable in main stream school, I found myself teaching in a unit for pupils with emotional and behavioral problems. Within a couple of years I was promoted to head teacher of the unit and spent the last 15 years of my teaching career developing the unit and thoroughly enjoying my job. One of the things that has always been very important to me is that I should make a difference in peoples lives. Helping these very damaged youngsters enabled me not only to teach them, but also to make a real difference in their lives. Encouraging them to feel accepted and to enjoy a level of educational success was all part of the job. It was a very rewarding career for me, but one that I would never have expected to end up in. |
